Now is the perfect time to assess your household waste.
Isn’t it odd how 2020 seemed like the year that would never end, and yet the first month of 2021 just flew by in the blink of an eye? I don’t recall even one person mentioning their New Year’s Resolutions! With all the confusion over how to keep safe during a global pandemic it can be easy to slip into bad habits of convenience and forget to pay attention to how many single use disposable items we are consuming. It’s not too late to resolve to live more environmentally conscious. And there is no time like the present to do a home assessment and find where you can reduce your waste!
How to perform a waste audit:
- Collect all your household trash for one week or more.
- Audit the trash you have collected by dumping it out and sorting it into piles of “like things together”.
- Make note of items that are more abundant than others. Those will be your biggest challenge to reduce.
- Using the rules of “R” (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Refill, Recycle, Repair, Rot) to access your waste and come up with some action steps to help you better avoid the waste altogether or better repurpose or recycle it in the future.
